Announcing The 2023 Indie Challenge

It's back! After a few years off, the Indie Challenge is back for 2023, to encourage us all to incorporate more independently published books into our reading lives. I'm deeply feeling the need for an old school reading challenge, like I used to do at the beginning of my life as a book blogger, so we're going back to absolute basics. Here's how it'll work:

First, choose your level of participation

- Newbie - read 6 books over the course of the year

- Student - read 12 books over the course of the year

- Ninja - read 18 books over the course of the year

- Master - read 24 books over the course of the year

Next, announce your intentions!

Write a blog post (if you still do that!), Instagram, twitter, Facebook, whatever about your intentions to join in and the level you plan on reading for (don't worry you can change this throughout the course of the challenge if you need to). Include your TBR if you like making them, or just wing it as the year goes by. Use #IndieChallenge2023 on social media please.

Sign up through the linky below, so we can keep up with everyone's progress and cheer you on! Every month I'll add a linky here on the blog so we can all link to what we've been reading so far. Sign up will be open until December 1st 2023.

You can define 'indie' in whatever way you like. Because I personally have been boycotting Amazon for over a decade now I am sadly unable to support self published authors who publish through Amazon, so I define indie as:

"Books published by a publisher who owns itself and whose decision making process is not controlled by outside entities or bigger companies."

They can be teeny or huge, they can have imprints, as long as the publisher itself is in charge of all the decisions, then it's indie in our eyes!

If you'd like ideas about where to start with indie books, check out our list of Indie Publishers to buy directly from, and this brilliant list of Independent Publishers in the UK and Ireland. As well as this there's also the entire Indie Challenge and Indie Book Network sections of our blog to browse, and of course you could make the process very easy by setting up a monthly preloved subscription and having us choose your books for you!

Happy reading, book lovers!
